Spiritually Prosperous Revelation

Revelation 1

(Read Revelation 1)

There are many reasons for us to read and study this great part of the Bible. We have mentioned two, that it reveals the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ and helps us understand the whole council of God. Now we will consider a third reason and then turn our attention to the text of the book. This third reason is perhaps a bit of both and therefore an apt bridge to all that is to follow.

The third reason is to be found in a special word in Revelation 1:3 it is the word “Blessed”. The greek word is Makarios (you may recognize the word in relation to a Cypriot Archbishop) normally translated in our Bible as happy, but it also has a connection with the idea of prosperity. Please do not jump the the conclusion that we are supporting the modern idea of the Christian monetary prosperity doctrine, remember Luke 9:25 linked with Luke 18:25 these both relate to earthly wealth.

As we continue the study of the word blessed and ponder the idea of prosperity, we need to consider what the Lord Jesus said, consider Matthew 6:19-21. The prosperity that the Lord looks for is the laying up of treasure in heaven. Therefore we are to be spiritually prosperous, by building with gold, silver and precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:12) and building a heavenly bank balance (Matthew 6:21).

So, how can we be spiritually prosperous according to Revelation 1:3? First by reading this wonderful book, The Revelation. Secondly by hearing it being read to us and thirdly by practicing the principles laid down in this book.

The word makarios, also occurs in Revelation 14:13, Revelation 16:15, Revelation 19:9, Revelation 20:6, Revelation 22:7 and Revelation 22:14.

As week seek to undertsand these we will be on the way to being truly spiritually prosperous, and therefore bring honour to God.
