A Priest

GOI Bible Study

The best gift for a priest

Matthew 2:1-12

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, not only as our Savior but also as our Great High Priest, who bridges the gap between humanity and God. Jesus came to offer Himself as the ultimate, once-for-all sacrifice. Hebrews His birth in humble circumstances foreshadowed His mission to bring reconciliation, offering access to God’s presence through His life, death, and resurrection. This Christmas, as we reflect on the baby in the manger, we are invited to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, knowing that through Jesus, we find mercy, forgiveness, and a Savior who continually intercedes for us.

There really is a peace that does surpass human understanding.

In this profound bible study, we delve into a theological exploration that challenges traditional Christmas narratives. Beyond the familiar nativity scene, we uncover a rich tapestry of symbolism embedded in the gifts presented to the infant Jesus. What deeper meanings lie beneath these seemingly simple offerings of gold, frankincense, and myrrh? This study invites believers to look beyond the surface and understand the profound typological significance of these gifts.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. Matthew 2:10

There really is a peace that does surpass human understanding.

  • The gifts of the Magi (gold, frankincense, and myrrh) carry deep theological symbolism
  • Gold represents:
    • Practical provision for the holy family’s escape to Egypt
    • Christ’s kingship
    • Christ’s divine nature
  • Frankincense symbolizes:
    • Pure worship
    • Spiritual communion with God
    • A sweet-smelling offering acceptable to God
  • Myrrh represents:
    • Christ’s humanity
    • Suffering and sacrifice
    • Anointing and liberation

And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

...here are these wise men and they bring this and they acknowledge that he is worthy of our worship and adoration.

The gifts were more than mere presents, they were prophetic declarations of Christ’s complete nature. From His divine kingship to His profound humanity, these gifts paint a beautiful, multifaceted portrait of our Savior. Most remarkably, they underscore God’s intricate planning and the extraordinary purpose of Jesus’ arrival on earth. As the speaker beautifully notes, these gifts reveal a Savior who is simultaneously King, God, and human - a Christ who came to set us free and bring us into communion with the divine.
