The best gift for a king
Matthew 2:1-12
As we approach Christmas, our hearts are drawn to the wonder of the nativity story—a tale of humble beginnings and extraordinary glory. But what does it mean for us today that Jesus is the King of kings? How does this truth shape our understanding of Christmas? As we reflect on Jesus’ kingship this Christmas, let us consider how we respond to Him. Will we bow in reverence as the wise men did, offering our gifts, our worship, and our lives? Let this Christmas be a time of renewed awe at the majesty of our King, who humbled Himself to dwell among us, so that we might one day reign with Him in glory.
God knows. God prepares and God makes possible all these things.
Have you ever wondered what deeper meaning lies behind the seemingly simple act of presenting gold to the newborn Christ? This study unravels the layers of theological insight hidden within this biblical narrative, challenging traditional interpretations and revealing God’s intricate providential planning.
saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:2
I'm not talking about secret courts here or hidden conspiracy theories, but something we, some of us would know as typology.
- The “Wise Men” or Magi were not kings, but astronomers skilled in reading stars
- The popular carol “We Three Kings” is historically inaccurate
- Gold gift served three primary symbolic purposes:
- Practical financial support for Mary and Joseph’s exile
- Symbol of Christ’s kingship
- Representation of divine nature
- God’s foreknowledge is demonstrated through historical preparations
- Biblical typology reveals deeper spiritual meanings beyond literal interpretation
- Christ was unique in being born a king, not just becoming one later
- The tabernacle’s construction with gold-covered wood symbolizes Christ’s dual nature
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11
God knows. God prepares and God makes possible all these things.
The gold presented to Jesus emerges as a profound theological statement - declaring his royal authority, divine nature, and God’s remarkable plan of provision. It’s a beautiful reminder that in the smallest details of scripture, we can find extraordinary insights about our Savior, Jesus Christ, who was born a king and continues to reign today.
