Paul's Defence Before Felix
Acts 24:1-17
Paul stands trial before Governor Felix, presenting a compelling defence of his faith and actions. How does Paul's testimony reflect Jesus' teachings, and what can we learn about defending our faith in challenging situations?

What happens when our faith puts us on trial before the world? In Acts 24, we find Paul standing before Roman authorities, facing false accusations from religious leaders who were determined to silence him. This fascinating chapter gives us a front-row seat to witness how a follower of Christ responds when confronted with lies, political maneuvering, and persecution.
For we have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. Acts 24:5
One day we will be raised and we'll be ushered into his presence. And when that day occurs, well, we'll look on his face and we'll be like him.
- The chapter features key characters: Ananias the high priest (ironically named “Grace of God”), Tertullus (meaning “Liar”), Felix (meaning “Decisive” or “happy and prosperous”), and Paul (meaning “little”)
- The accusers used common flattery to gain favor with Felix, the Roman governor
- Tertullus presented three false accusations against Paul:
- Paul was a troublemaker and pest
- Paul was a leader of the “sect of the Nazarenes”
- Paul was a defiler of the temple
- Paul made a confident defense, knowing Felix had good knowledge of local affairs
- Paul’s defense included his confession of faith, stating he worships “the God of my fathers”
- Paul expressed his hope in the resurrection of both the just and unjust
- Felix kept Paul in comfortable imprisonment for two years
- Felix procrastinated making a decision about Paul, hoping for a bribe
- Felix was eventually recalled to Rome after causing violence against Jews in Caesarea
having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. Acts 24:15
That ought to be our ambition now, by the way, to be like him.
What stands out most powerfully is Paul’s unwavering focus on Jesus throughout this trial. Rather than becoming bitter about his circumstances or compromising his message, Paul boldly proclaimed the resurrection and coming judgment. He understood that his current suffering was nothing compared to the glory that awaited him in Christ.
Jesus is portrayed throughout this passage as the center of Paul’s hope—the one who rose from the dead and will one day judge the world with perfect justice. While Felix trembled at the message of righteousness, self-control, and judgment, he ultimately procrastinated and missed his opportunity to respond to the gospel. This serves as a powerful reminder that we should never delay in our response to Christ.
