Acts 1:1-11

Join us in a thought-provoking study of Acts 1:1-11, where we delve into the profound account of Jesus' life and ascension. Discover the depth of Scripture and the remarkable narrative of faith encapsulated within these verses as we explore together.

He is still doing and he's still teaching through the person of the Holy Spirit today.

Have you ever wondered what happened immediately after Jesus ascended to heaven? How did the early church begin and what was Christ’s new role in the continued story of Christianity? This Bible study explores the first chapter of Acts, revealing five significant “new things” that marked the transition from Jesus’ earthly ministry to the beginning of the church age.

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, Acts 1:1

I think what we should take is the complicated things and make them simple.

  • Acts is an unfinished book with no ending, suggesting that we are still part of its continuing story
  • The author, Luke (a physician who traveled with Paul), addresses the book to Theophilus, whose name means “lover of God”
  • Luke-Acts together cover all major biblical doctrines about Jesus Christ
  • Acts shows what Jesus “continues” to do and teach through the Holy Spirit
  • The resurrection of Jesus is supported by “many convincing proofs” including his appearing, teaching, eating, walking, and cooking
  • Jesus’ ascension places Him in a new position of authority at God’s right hand
  • The Holy Spirit was promised as a new power for believers to be effective witnesses
  • The disciples’ mission expanded from local to worldwide
  • Christ’s return is promised as our new hope - the same Jesus will return physically “in like manner”

and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:11

He is still doing and he's still teaching through the person of the Holy Spirit today.

As we’ve seen through this study, Jesus’ ascension wasn’t the end of the story but rather a new beginning. While He may have physically left earth, He continues His work through the Holy Spirit in believers. Jesus now sits enthroned in heaven with all authority - “He is on the throne. He does reign.” This should bring us tremendous comfort knowing that despite appearances, our Savior is in control of all things. The promise of His return isn’t meant to spark endless speculation but rather to summon us “to make ourselves ready for that day when he comes.” Until then, we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses throughout the world.
