Acts 5:1-16

Take a reflective pause with us as we explore Acts 5:1-16, contemplating the honesty reflected in the narrative of Ananias and Sapphira. How does this cautionary tale prompt us to examine the sincerity of our own faith and the healing power of Jesus in our lives?

Maybe instead of praying for revival we should pray for the hand of judgment to touch the church...

Have you ever wondered how God deals with dishonesty within the church and what impact it has on growth? In this Bible study on Acts 5:1-16, we explore the powerful contrast between deception and divine intervention in the early church. The story of Ananias and Sapphira serves as a sobering reminder of God’s holiness and the consequences of spiritual hypocrisy. Yet, despite this harsh judgment, we witness how the Lord continued to bless the church with remarkable growth and healing ministry. This passage challenges us to consider what authentic faith looks like and how God’s judgment within the church can actually lead to greater spiritual vitality.

But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Acts 5:9

If God was to act in the same way today the church would either be empty and closed down or we'd be a vibrant living evangelical reminded church.

  • The chapter begins with “but,” indicating a contrast with the positive events of chapter 4
  • Two major incidents are highlighted: infidelity (Ananias and Sapphira) and increase (church growth)
  • Ananias and Sapphira sin was not primarily against the apostles or church but against the Holy Spirit
  • It was a conspiracy between husband and wife, showing premeditated deception
  • The public knowledge of this judgment produced a holy fear throughout the church
  • Despite (or because of) this judgment, the church experienced tremendous growth
  • Great miracles occurred, with people being healed even by Peter’s shadow
  • Spiritual perception and discernment were crucial for the apostles to identify deception
  • The church grew as people witnessed both God’s judgment and healing power

And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, Acts 5:14

Maybe instead of praying for revival we should pray for the hand of judgment to touch the church...

Throughout this Bible study, we see the powerful way Jesus continues His ministry through the apostles after His ascension. While He is not physically present in this passage, His authority is clearly shown through the Holy Spirit’s work in the church. Though the judgment on Ananias and Sapphira seems harsh, it reminds us that Jesus takes the purity of His church seriously. And isn’t it amazing how the Lord can use even difficult situations to bring about growth? The crowds that came for healing demonstrate that Jesus’ ministry of compassion continued through His followers. This passage leaves us with an important challenge: are we being authentic in our faith, or merely putting on a religious show? God still works powerfully today when His church walks in truth rather than hypocrisy.
