The Sin of Favoritism
James 2:1-13
An exhortation against showing partiality within the church, reminding us that God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom.
If my bullets fit your gun, feel free to fire them.
Have you ever found yourself treating people differently based on their appearance, wealth, or status? This Bible study, drawn from James chapter 2 verses 1 to 13, challenges us to examine our hearts and our behaviour toward one another. It explores what it truly means to live as a follower of Christ in our everyday interactions, our language, our love for others, and our obedience to God’s moral law.
My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. James 2:1
If my bullets fit your gun, feel free to fire them.
- Christians should show no favouritism or partiality — we are all equal in the sight of God
- There should be no distinction between believers in terms of status, gifts, or calling; all are servants
- Language should be kept pure and respectful, avoiding anything that could be considered blasphemous or casual toward God
- Believers are called to fulfil the royal law by loving their neighbour practically and consistently
- Keeping short accounts with God through confession is vital — stumbling in one point of the law is still stumbling
- Gifts and callings within the church should be identified, encouraged, and not elevated above one another
- Non-Christians often hold Christians to a higher standard of behaviour, so consistency in faith and conduct matters greatly
- Care and love should begin within the household of faith before extending outward to others
But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. James 2:9
You might as well say the real word because it means the same.
This is a warm and honest study that doesn’t pull any punches, addressing some uncomfortable truths about how we treat people and how we live out our faith. What comes through clearly is a genuine love for people and a desire to see the church be the best version of itself. On the subject of Jesus, a point is made that feels worth sitting with — while Jesus is our Saviour and our friend, he is also God, and deserves to be treated with reverence and not taken lightly. That balance of intimacy and awe is perhaps the heartbeat of the whole study.
