Boasting About Tomorrow
James 4:8-17
A reminder of the brevity of life and the presumption of planning without acknowledging God's will, for our life is but a mist.
Everything that I have, everything I am, is only by his grace.
Have you ever found yourself drifting, going through the motions of faith while something inside feels distant or disconnected? This Bible study from James 4 gets to the heart of that tension. It asks us to look honestly at where we really are with God, not just on the surface but deep down, where our habits, our plans and our pride quietly take root. What does it actually mean to draw near to God? And what might be standing in the way? Come and open your Bible with that question in mind. You might be surprised by what you find.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8
Everything that I have, everything I am, is only by his grace.
- Humility is always self-imposed, not something forced on us by others. True humility is a recognition that we are part of something greater, not a licence to be passive or avoid standing for truth.
- Drawing near to God is a two-way commitment. When we take the step toward God, he responds in kind. The initiative lies with us.
- Cleansing is both inward and outward. It is not enough to be outwardly conforming while the heart is somewhere else entirely. God requires clean hands, clean lips, a clean mind and a pure heart.
- The Christian life demands seriousness. This includes a voluntary stepping back from comfort and frivolity, mourning our failures honestly, and keeping short accounts with God rather than sweeping things under the carpet.
- Judging others wrongly is a failure of love. There is a difference between spiritual discernment, which is necessary, and harsh, petty or unforgiving judgment of individuals, which belongs to God alone.
- God is the lawgiver and the one in ultimate authority. His deity and sovereignty run through every aspect of how we are called to live.
- Making plans without God is a form of self-deception. We are dreamers when we map out our lives as though God has no say. Man proposes, but God disposes.
- Doing good must be demonstrated, not just declared. Jesus did not merely preach love, he showed it. We are called to do the same.
Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:15
It's a mistaken confidence to think we can accomplish anything in our own strength, by our own wisdom.
At the heart of everything in this study is a simple but searching truth: Jesus showed us the way. Not just by what he said, but by how he lived, how he loved and how he humbled himself completely. Every theme we have explored, whether it is drawing near to God, living with integrity, letting go of judgment or surrendering our plans, points us back to him. He is the one in whom all of this finds its fullest expression. And the good news is that as we turn toward him, he turns toward us.
