The Rain Returns
1 Kings 18:41-44
From a great victory to afraid and in hiding God is still sufficient and still provides.
Work as if it depends on you. Pray as if it all depends on God.
Have you ever wondered how to pray effectively and what it means to truly hear God’s voice? In this Bible study, we explore powerful lessons from Elijah’s prayer life in 1 Kings 18. Through examining both his public and private prayers, we discover essential principles that can transform our own prayer life and deepen our connection with God.
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 1 Kings 18:41
If it was important for the Lord to communicate with his Father, how much more it is important for us to communicate with our heavenly Father.
- Elijah’s prayer was based on God’s specific promise to send rain
- True faith involves taking, believing, and acting on God’s word
- Elijah demonstrated both public prayer (for fire) and private prayer (for rain)
- Private prayer builds the foundation for public prayer
- Elijah’s posture showed deep reverence
- True prayer acknowledges God’s sovereignty and our dependence
- Avoid vague, wandering prayers
- Present clear, definite requests to God
- Elijah sent his servant seven times to look for rain
- Keep praying until God provides His answer
And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 1 Kings 18:44
Work as if it depends on you. Pray as if it all depends on God.
God delights in revealing His truth to those who earnestly seek Him. He speaks through His written Word, through the inner witness of His Spirit, and through His divine promises. When we approach Him with reverent hearts and listening ears, He gives wisdom and direction. God’s answers come in His perfect timing - sometimes immediately, sometimes after persistent prayer, and always in accordance with His will. He may say yes, no, or wait, but He never ignores the sincere prayers of His children. The key is developing spiritual ears to hear His voice, just as Elijah heard the sound of rain before any clouds appeared.
Through this study of Elijah’s prayer life, we see that Jesus remains our ultimate example of maintaining constant communion with the Father. The power of prayer isn’t in our eloquence but in our faith and persistence. Whether in public or private, God invites us into deep fellowship with Him through prayer. Like Elijah, we can experience God’s faithful answers when we pray with faith, humility, and perseverance.
