The Vision of Christ

Revelation 1:9-20

Take your shoes from off your feet as we stand on holy ground.

The portrait of Christ and the position of Christ. The presence of Christ and the proclamation of Christ.

This Bible study, “The Vision of Christ,” explores the magnificent revelation of Jesus Christ found in Revelation 1:9-20. As part of the broader “Revelation of Jesus” series, this study addresses the fundamental question: How should we respond when we truly comprehend the majesty and glory of Christ? Through John’s extraordinary vision on the island of Patmos, we discover not just a revelation about Jesus, but a revelation by Jesus himself, showing us His divine authority, perfect holiness, and loving presence among His churches.

and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. Revelation 1:13

If God manifest in a bush command solemnity, what shall we say of the God manifest in Christ?

  • John was exiled to Patmos for his faithful testimony and refusal to compromise his faith in Christ, demonstrating the cost of discipleship in the face of persecution
  • The vision occurred on “the Lord’s Day” (Sunday), which commemorates Christ’s victory over death and represents a time of worship rather than judgment
  • The seven golden lampstands represent the seven churches in Asia, symbolizing the complete church in the muddy, worldly environment, with Christ standing in their midst
  • Christ appears as the Son of Man, clothed in priestly robes with a golden belt around His chest, symbolizing His authority balanced with love
  • His white hair represents wisdom and purity, connecting Him with the Ancient of Days, while His blazing eyes demonstrate His omniscience
  • The seven stars in Christ’s right hand represent the angels (messengers) of the seven churches—those who are attuned to God’s voice in each congregation
  • John’s reaction of falling “as though dead” demonstrates the proper response to Christ’s divine majesty and glory
  • The church is called to be autonomous yet Christ-centered, with Jesus exercising loving authority in the midst of His people
  • Christians are called to approach worship with reverence and recognition of Christ’s constant presence, not casually or lightly

and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Revelation 1:18

To be effective in any teaching, it is first necessary to note not by report only, but by experience. God pours his truth through the heart and lives and not merely through the minds of his servants.

This study challenges us to think about how we approach worship and whether we’re treating Jesus with the reverence He deserves. It’s not about being stuffy or overly formal, but about recognizing who we’re actually dealing with when we gather as His church. Jesus is right there in the midst, and that should change everything about how we come before Him.
