One Gospel

Galatians 1:1-10

Paul's letter to the Galatians is a war cry to defend the gospel of grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. In an age of competing messages, how can we be sure that the good news we believe is the one true gospel that saves?

If it's not in the Bible, it's not going to be right.

In a world saturated with competing religions, philosophies, and even variations within Christianity itself, how do we navigate the confusion and remain anchored to truth? This Bible study on Galatians 1:1-10 addresses the critical question: What happens when the church strays from the one true Gospel, and how do we guard against false teachings? Through Paul’s urgent letter to the Galatian churches, we discover the apostle’s passionate defense of the Gospel and his stern warning against any distortion of the message of salvation through Christ alone.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:3

If it's not in the Bible, it's not going to be right.

  • The Galatian churches were located in what is now Turkey, established by the Gauls (from southern France) around 280 BC, later becoming a Roman province around 25-28 BC.
  • Paul addressed churches facing multiple conflicting influences: Oriental ideology in the north, Greek philosophy in the south, and Judaizers attempting to add requirements to the Gospel.
  • Paul’s motivation as an apostle was clear—he was sent by God, not by human appointment, giving him divine authority to correct false teaching.
  • The core issue in Galatia was that believers were “quickly deserting” the true Gospel for a distorted version, which Paul declared was “really not another” gospel at all.
  • Paul uses extraordinarily strong language twice, stating that anyone preaching a contrary gospel should be “accursed”—demonstrating the severity of leading people away from biblical truth.
  • Modern society mirrors the Galatian context with many religions vying for attention (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, etc.) and even Christianity fragmenting into countless denominations and traditions.
  • False ideas persist today, from evolution theory to various cultural movements, often contradicting Scripture while claiming to be beneficial or progressive.
  • The danger of misunderstanding occurs when Christians neglect foundational practices: prayer, Bible reading, and sharing faith according to God’s Word rather than personal opinion.
  • Church divisions often result from following man’s practices rather than keeping focus on the Word of God, as seen in various movements that have split congregations.
  • The essential requirement for any Christian gathering is preaching the truth that salvation is found in Christ alone, through faith alone—not through rituals, human traditions, or personal opinions.
  • God may occasionally speak directly and challenge believers, but such experiences must always be confirmed by Scripture and align with biblical truth.
  • Christ must always be central in every message and practice—He is “the way, the truth, and the life,” and there is no other path to salvation.

I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 1 Corinthians 1:10

If they are Christian, I'll have fellowship with them.

So what’s the takeaway from all this? Well, it’s pretty simple really—Jesus is everything. Paul couldn’t have been clearer about it. Christ must be first, second, and all the way through. He’s the central theme, and God put Him there, so we should keep Him there! The whole point of the Gospel is that Jesus gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil age. That’s massive, isn’t it? And when churches or individuals start adding their own opinions, traditions, or requirements to that simple truth, they’re not just making a mistake—they’re committing what Paul calls a serious sin worthy of being cursed. Heavy stuff! But here’s the encouragement: as long as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and hold fast to the truth that salvation comes through faith in Christ alone, we’re on solid ground. Everything else is just details. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life—and that’s the one Gospel we need to proclaim and protect. Let’s keep it simple, keep it true, and keep it centered on Him.
