Witnessing Amid Persecution
Acts 21:15-40
In Jerusalem, Paul testifies to the gospel even as opposition rises. His calm defense of the faith reflects the power of Christ to strengthen His servants in the face of adversity.
I believe any conforming we do has to be conformed to the image of Christ.
Have you ever wondered how we should balance tradition and new convictions in our Christian walk? In this Bible study, we explore Acts 21:20-39, which details Paul’s return to Jerusalem and the controversy that follows. Paul faces a difficult situation where his reputation among Jewish believers is at stake, and he must navigate between his gospel message and Jewish customs. This passage challenges us to consider when compromise is appropriate and when we must stand firm on our convictions.
On the following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were present. Acts 21:18
I believe any conforming we do has to be conformed to the image of Christ.
- Paul arrived in Jerusalem with companions from Caesarea and stayed with Mnason of Cyprus, who was likely converted during the first Pentecost
- The Jewish believers in Jerusalem were concerned about Paul’s reputation among Jews, who believed he was teaching against Moses’ laws
- Paul was asked to participate in a purification ritual with four men under a Nazirite vow to demonstrate his respect for Jewish law
- Paul agreed to sponsor these men and participate in the ritual, which some view as a compromise of his principles
- The Roman captain initially mistook Paul for an Egyptian revolutionary who had previously caused trouble
- Paul requested and was granted permission to address the Jewish crowd, and they unexpectedly fell silent to hear him
And when he came to the steps, he was actually carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd, Acts 21:35
Beliefs have to be based on the word of God alone.
As we reflect on Paul’s experience in Jerusalem, we see how even this great apostle faced challenging situations that required wisdom. Throughout this study, we’ve seen that Jesus remains our ultimate example for navigating difficult choices. Unlike the religious leaders of his day, Jesus prioritized the spirit of the law over mere tradition, and relationship with God over ritual. While Paul may have compromised in some ways by participating in temple rituals, he never compromised on the gospel message itself. This reminds us that as followers of Christ, we must discern through the Word and the Spirit when to accommodate others and when to stand firm, always keeping our focus on Jesus as our guide and Lord.
