Have you ever wondered what makes a truly vibrant and effective church? Today, we’ll explore a remarkable example from the early Christian church in Antioch. This study will challenge us to consider how we can apply these principles in our own congregations and lives. As we delve into Acts 13:1-12, we’ll discover the power of diverse leadership, the importance of spiritual practices, and the impact of bold faith in action.
Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Acts 13:1
We often used to hear people saying, "What we need is New Testament churches." But when we look at the epistles, they suggest that New Testament churches, like our churches, had problems that need to be solved.
- The church in Antioch had diverse leadership from various backgrounds and nationalities.
- Spiritual practices such as ministering to the Lord, fasting, and prayer were central to their activities.
- The Holy Spirit actively guided the church in selecting and sending out missionaries.
- Paul and Barnabas encountered both openness and opposition as they spread the gospel.
- The power of God was displayed through confronting false prophets and converting influential figures.
- There was a shift in leadership dynamics, with Paul taking a more prominent role.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Acts 13:2

In Acts 13, we’re reminded of the transformative power of Jesus Christ in the early church. The diversity, spiritual devotion, and boldness we see in the Antioch church challenge us to examine our own faith communities. Jesus’ promise to build His church is vividly illustrated in this passage, showing how ordinary people became extraordinary instruments in God’s hands. Let’s be inspired to listen more closely to the Holy Spirit, embrace diversity, and step out in faith to share the gospel, just as Paul and Barnabas did. Remember, the same power that worked through them is available to us today!
