Paul's Testimony of Grace
Acts 22:1-30
Paul shares his dramatic conversion story, highlighting the transformative power of the gospel. His testimony shows that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, who redeems even the fiercest opponents.
He is so identified with us and we with him, that attacking us is like attacking God.
Have you ever wondered how to effectively share your testimony with those who might be hostile to your faith? Paul’s defense in Acts 22 offers remarkable insights into connecting with critics while staying true to God’s calling.
And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ Acts 22:8
He is so identified with us and we with him, that attacking us is like attacking God.
- Paul structured his defense in three parts: identification with the Jews, his encounter with Christ, and his Roman citizenship
- Paul established credibility by speaking in the Hebrew dialect (Aramaic), mentioning his education under Gamaliel, and his previous zeal in persecuting Christians
- Christ personally confronted Paul on the Damascus road with a supernatural bright light at noon
- Jesus identified so closely with His followers that He considered persecution against them as persecution against Himself
- Paul’s mention of being sent to the Gentiles provoked intense anger from the Jewish crowd
- Paul wisely used his Roman citizenship to legally protect himself from unlawful punishment
- Christians should not seek martyrdom but should use legal means available to continue their ministry
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name. Acts 22:16
Where is Christian love? Where is our unity in Christ?
This study of Paul’s defense reminds us of Jesus’ incredible love for His church. When Jesus told Paul, “Why are you persecuting me?”, He revealed how deeply He identifies with His followers - we truly are the body of Christ. How amazing that the Creator of the universe takes our mistreatment personally! Paul’s willingness to follow God’s call despite rejection offers a powerful example for us today. While we should wisely use legal protections available to us, we must always maintain our commitment to sharing Christ’s love across all boundaries - avoiding the narrow-mindedness that characterized Paul’s accusers. After all, every believer is part of the same body, united in Christ.
