Continuity
Genesis 5:
We trace the generations from Adam to Noah, highlighting the inescapable reality of sin and death. This genealogical record reminds us of our mortality, but what hope does the promise of Jesus and eternal life offer us in the face of death?
We are not naturally Christians but when we become Christians by receiving Jesus Christ as our saviour we are then become adopted sons of God and we move into that deeper richer relationship.
Have you ever wondered why the Bible includes those long lists of names that seem difficult to follow? This Bible study on Genesis 5 addresses that very question, revealing how genealogies are far more than dry records—they demonstrate God’s faithfulness across generations, His intimate knowledge of every individual, and how faith is passed down through relationships. Rather than skipping these passages, we discover they contain profound truths about God’s grace, His purposeful plan, and our place in His family.
This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Genesis 5:1
We are not naturally Christians but when we become Christians by receiving Jesus Christ as our saviour we are then become adopted sons of God and we move into that deeper richer relationship.
- Genealogies in the Bible can be instructive and beneficial, revealing important spiritual truths despite being difficult to follow
- The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew includes five women who, under natural circumstances, would have been shunned, demonstrating God’s grace
- These women (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary) show how God brings people who are not naturally part of the family into the genealogy of Jesus
- Christians are adopted sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, moving into a deeper relationship with Him
- The generations overlapped significantly—for example, Methuselah lived 969 years and would have known multiple generations
- Abraham’s faith didn’t come from nowhere—he would have known Noah for over 50 years and learned from previous generations
- Faith is built on truth and knowledge that we learn, not blind faith
- Seth is recognized as the true descendant after Cain killed Abel and was banished
- Enoch went straight to heaven without dying—one of only two people in the Bible to do so
- God keeps a record of every individual and knows everything about us—when we were born, everything we’ve done, even our thoughts
- God is always working His purposes out, often through people
- We are co-workers with God, not merely slaves—He trusts us to fulfill His purposes
- All people are descended from Adam, and later from Noah, reminding us that despite our diversity, we share common ancestry
After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Genesis 5:32
Faith is based on truth trustingly but we believe in this and it's because some people actually say we talk about having faith faith is based on knowledge we look and we trust.
So there you have it—those seemingly boring lists of names are actually packed with meaning! The biggest takeaway for me is how Jesus’ genealogy included all those unexpected women, showing us that God’s grace reaches everyone, no matter their background. It’s a beautiful reminder that through Christ, we’re all brought into God’s family, not because we deserve it, but because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Just like those women found their place in Jesus’ family tree, we too are adopted as sons and daughters of God when we put our faith in Him. That’s the heart of the gospel right there—Jesus making a way for outsiders to become insiders, for strangers to become family. Pretty amazing when you think about it!
