circumstances

Genesis 26-27:

Themes of blessing and deception emerge as Isaac follows in his father's footsteps and Jacob uses trickery to secure his father's final blessing.

God is always at work, sometimes obvious and sometimes behind the scenes.

Have you ever looked back on your life and suddenly seen a pattern you completely missed while you were living through it? Decisions that seemed unconnected, circumstances that felt random, even moments that were painful or confusing, and yet somehow, from a distance, they form something you could never have designed yourself. This Bible study takes us into Genesis 26 and 27, where two generations of one family make choices, repeat mistakes, fall into deception, and yet, running through all of it like a thread pulled tight, God is at work. The question worth sitting with as you open your Bible is this: if God is truly in control, what does that mean for the mess and confusion of my own life right now? Come and see what the story of Isaac, Jacob and Esau has to say about that.

And the LORD appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. Genesis 26:2

God is always at work, sometimes obvious and sometimes behind the scenes.

  • God is always at work in our lives, even when we cannot see it. We often only recognise his hand looking backwards, with the clarity of hindsight.
  • Spiritual growth requires three things working together: wisdom sought through prayer, knowledge gained through regular Bible reading, and the Spirit of God working within us.
  • The fruit of the Spirit is singular, not plural. At its heart is love, and from love flows patience with people, with God’s word, and with the process of growing in faith.
  • Isaac is an easily overlooked figure, but his quiet obedience and faithfulness were essential to God’s purposes. Not everyone who serves God does so visibly.
  • Repeating the mistakes of those who went before us is a constant danger. We are called to study the word for ourselves rather than simply accepting what we are told.
  • Christians should be careful about relationships and ventures that, while not wrong in themselves, can gradually pull them away from walking closely with God.
  • The birthright and blessing in the ancient world carried both privilege and responsibility: the double portion came with the duty to care for and lead the wider family.
  • God did not endorse the deception carried out by Jacob and Rebecca, but he was able to work through it to keep the line of the Messiah pure and on course.
  • Even mature, long-standing believers can be deceived or led astray. Each of us remains personally responsible for keeping our feet grounded in Christ and his word.
  • Satan is real but limited. He can only act within the boundaries God permits. Nothing happens outside of God’s ultimate knowledge and authority.
  • Faith and hope are not temporary gifts that end at death. They will remain meaningful into eternity, because there will always be more of God to trust and to discover.
  • God’s purposes will be accomplished. We may not understand his ways, but we can trust that he knows the end from the beginning.

May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Genesis 27:28

The wisdom of man is foolishness to God, but God will work his purposes out.

What this study leaves us with, more than anything, is the quiet but unshakeable truth that God does not lose the plot. Through families that repeat old mistakes, through deception and conflict and choices that seem to derail everything, he keeps working. He kept the line of the Messiah pure not because everyone behaved well, but because he is sovereign. And that same Jesus, whose coming was being prepared through all these complicated, very human stories, is the one we trust with our own complicated, very human lives today. He knows the end from the beginning. We can trust him with everything in between.
