Better Rest
Hebrews 4
Hebrews 4 explores the concept of a 'better rest' that believers find in Christ, contrasting it with the rest promised to the Israelites. This passage emphasizes that true rest comes from trusting in Jesus and entering into His finished work, offering a spiritual peace and renewal beyond mere physical rest.
the Word of God came to the common people
In Hebrews 4, we explore the profound question: “What does it truly mean to enter God’s rest?” This study delves into different interpretations of rest in scripture, from physical to spiritual, while examining how God’s Word penetrates our lives. Whether you’re new to Bible study or a long-time believer, this exploration offers valuable insights into how we can experience God’s peace both now and eternally.
For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. Hebrews 4:2
When the English Bible was laid bare, the Word of God came to the common people, the tremendous event of the Reformation inevitably followed.
- The Greek word for “rest” carries the idea of repose - like relaxing after a hard day
- Rest is presented in three distinct ways:
- The peace of God
- The Promised Land (Canaan)
- God’s rest after the sixth day of creation
- The promise of God’s rest still remains available today
- Unbelief was the reason the Israelites couldn’t enter the Promised Land
- Canaan should not be confused with heaven as a picture of rest
- The Word of God is living and effective throughout history
Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4:11
Someone once called them distrusting cowards.
In Hebrews 4 we have a reminder of Jesus’s role as our great high priest, serving as the perfect intermediary between God and humanity. The mention of Melchizedek points us toward future discussions about Christ’s priesthood, emphasising Jesus’s unique position in bringing us into true rest. It’s worth noting how the study brings us full circle - from understanding different types of rest to recognising that our ultimate rest is found in Christ himself, our great high priest who makes intercession for us.
