Better Character

Hebrews 2:9-18

Hebrews 2:9-18 reveals the profound humanity of Jesus, showing how He shares in our suffering to become a merciful and faithful High Priest. This passage underscores His empathetic character and role in overcoming sin and death, offering believers a model of perfect character and a source of unwavering support.

Somebody once said the greatest victory Satan ever got was when he made people believe he doesn't exist.

Have you ever wondered why Jesus needed to become fully human while remaining fully God? In this study of Hebrews 2:9-17, we explore how Christ’s humanity was essential to our salvation and what it means that He calls us His brothers and sisters. Join us as we discover why Jesus becoming “lower than the angels” was actually part of God’s perfect plan for bringing many sons to glory.

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Hebrews 2:9

Somebody once said the greatest victory Satan ever got was when he made people believe he doesn't exist.

  • Jesus was made “lower than the angels” for a time to become fully human
  • The name “Jesus” emphasizes His humanity in this passage
  • Christ’s humanity was necessary for Him to suffer death for everyone
  • He is crowned with glory and honor after His suffering
  • He is the author/champion/founder of our salvation
  • Satan’s power over death has been broken through Christ
  • Believers are called “descendants of Abraham” through faith
  • Jesus is not ashamed to call believers His brothers and sisters

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17

We are volunteers in the army of God.

This passage beautifully reveals how Jesus bridges the gap between divinity and humanity. Through His willingness to become fully human and experience death, He has defeated our greatest enemy and made us part of His family. The fact that Jesus, crowned with glory and honor, is “not ashamed to call us brethren” shows the incredible depth of His love and the dignity He restores to those who trust in Him. What amazing grace that the King of Glory would not only save us but make us His brothers and sisters!
