Upper Room Pt 2
John 14:
As he prepares his disciples for his departure, Jesus comforts them with the promise of a place in his Father's house and the gift of the Holy Spirit. How can we find comfort and security in Jesus's words today, knowing that he has prepared a way for us to be with him forever?
There are many roads to Christ but there's only one to God.
How can we truly know God and what awaits us in eternity? This Bible study explores John 14, one of Scripture’s most beloved passages, where Jesus addresses the hearts of His troubled disciples with magnificent promises about heaven, the Trinity, and the Holy Spirit. Through examining Christ’s words about preparing a place for us and His identity as “the way, the truth, and the life,” we discover profound truths about our heavenly citizenship, the nature of God revealed in Christ, and the unity we share through His love.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
The reality is there will be a special place for us and this life is the training ground for our life in heaven and will only be there what we are here.
- The chapter presents a great exhortation: if you believe in God, believe also in Christ, as He is God manifest in the flesh
- Jesus promises dwelling places in His Father’s house and His return to take believers there
- Heaven is described as magnificent beyond imagination, characterized by eternal quality and everlasting duration
- Our Father, Savior, home, name (in the Lamb’s book of life), life, heart, inheritance, citizenship, and many friends and relatives are all in heaven
- To know Christ is to know the Father - Jesus is the perfect expression of all that God is
- Jesus is the only way to God: “I am the way, the truth, and the life”
- The Holy Spirit is “another comforter” - using the Greek word meaning identical, showing He is the exact replica of Christ
- The great truth of the Trinity is revealed: knowing the Son means knowing the Father; having the Spirit means having Christ
- God’s peace flows from His heart and gives assurance that believers are His forever
- The commandment to love one another brings great unity among believers
- Love is the foundational fruit of the Spirit, with all other characteristics (joy, peace, patience, etc.) flowing from it
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. John 14:20
There are many roads to Christ but there's only one to God.
The beauty of John 14 is how it all centers on Jesus - He’s not just showing us the way to heaven, He IS the way. He’s preparing our heavenly home right now, and the Spirit He sent is His exact replica, working to make us more like Christ every day. The peace He gives isn’t dependent on our circumstances but on His unchanging promise that once we’re His children, we’re His forever. And isn’t it amazing that the same Jesus who is fully God cared enough to reassure His worried disciples (and us!) about what lies ahead? This life is our training ground, friends, and heaven is going to be more magnificent than we can possibly imagine. So let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, love one another well, and look forward to that great reunion day when He comes to take us home. What a Savior!
