The Son and the Father

John 5:17-31

Jesus declares His unity with the Father, emphasizing that He has authority to grant life and execute judgment. This passage highlights the gospel’s central message: eternal life is found in hearing and believing the word of the Son of God.

He was holy, he was righteous, it was veiled.

This Bible study explores a fundamental question: “How does Jesus reveal His relationship with God the Father?” The study delves into John 5, examining Jesus’s claims of equality with God, His relationship with the Father, and the implications for believers.

This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:18

He was holy, he was righteous, it was veiled. That deity character was veiled for the purpose of working out our salvation.

  • Jesus’s statement about God being His Father was understood by the Jews as a claim to equality with God, demonstrating His divine nature.
  • The relationship between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit shows perfect reflection and unity, with each being identical in character and purpose.
  • In terms of deity Jesus is equal with the Father, but in the work of deliverance He voluntarily subjected Himself to the Father’s will.
  • Christians are called to reflect God the Father through the Spirit in the Son, copying the Father’s ways and speaking His words.
  • The “coming hour” refers to Christ’s return, which will bring a clear distinction between believers and non-believers through two separate resurrections.

For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, John 5:22

God's love is perfect and it's equal for every individual. We would save ourselves an awful lot of heartache if we could grasp that because it would bring a contentment and a peace.

This Bible study powerfully illustrates Jesus’s unique relationship with the Father and His role in our salvation. Through examining various passages, we see Jesus as both equal with God in deity while voluntarily submitting to accomplish our redemption. The study emphasizes that Jesus never refuted His deity - it was simply veiled for the purpose of working out our salvation. His perfect reflection of the Father’s character and purpose gives us a model to follow in our own Christian walk.
