The Messiah in Secret: Timing and Truth
John 7:1-16
Jesus travels to the Feast of Tabernacles in secret, teaching with wisdom that astonishes His listeners. The gospel is revealed in His declaration that His teaching comes from God, inviting all to recognize Him as the promised Messiah.
It's all about God's timing and we need to be fully aware that God's timing and ours are two entirely different things.
Have you ever wondered about God’s timing in your life? This Bible study on John 7:1-16 explores the fascinating dynamics of divine timing versus human expectations. As Jesus navigates the dangers of Jerusalem during the Feast of Pentecost (also called the Feast of Booths), we see how His wisdom in waiting for the right moment demonstrates an important lesson for all believers. Through this passage, we discover that God’s perfect timing often differs from our own plans, yet always serves His greater purpose.
Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. John 7:6
It's all about God's timing and we need to be fully aware that God's timing and ours are two entirely different things.
- Jesus showed caution by initially avoiding Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him
- His unbelieving brothers made a “clumsy attempt” to get Jesus to go to Jerusalem
- Jesus said “My time is not yet come” using the Greek word “kairos” (opportune time) rather than “hora” (destined hour)
- There was a cool relationship between Jesus and His brothers who did not believe in Him
- Jesus eventually went to Jerusalem “not publicly but in secret” when the right moment came
- The crowd was divided about Jesus - some saying He was good, others that He led people astray
- Jesus taught in the temple despite not having formal education
- Jesus declared that His teaching came from God who sent Him, not from Himself
- We should be patient with God’s timing, which differs from our own expectations
- The truth of God’s Word will always divide people - some will believe, others will reject
- As Christians, we are all “sent ones” with a mission to share the gospel
The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” John 7:15
We don't have to make the gospel relevant it is always relevant in any age.
What a powerful reminder that Jesus is the perfect example of wisdom in all things, including timing! Throughout this study, we’ve seen how Jesus navigated dangerous circumstances with divine insight, knowing exactly when to act and when to wait. His declaration that “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me” shows His complete submission to the Father’s will and timing. Like Jesus, we too are sent with a message that will divide people, but we must remain faithful to share it. As we face our own challenges and opportunities, let’s remember to seek God’s timing rather than forcing our own, trusting that His plan is always perfect even when it doesn’t match our schedule.
