Division and Revelation: Responses to Jesus

John 7:17-53

Jesus confronts the crowd with His divine origins, causing division among His listeners. The gospel shines through as Jesus offers living water to those who believe, foreshadowing the gift of the Spirit to all who accept Him.

No religion will lead you to God; only Jesus Christ can.

What does it mean to truly understand God’s teaching? In this Bible study, we explore John 7, where Jesus addresses the essential connection between doing God’s will and recognizing divine truth. This passage challenges us to examine whether we are merely hearers of the Word or active doers, fully committed to living out God’s purposes in our lives.

If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. John 7:17

No religion will lead you to God; only Jesus Christ can.

  • The teaching is open to “anyone” who is willing to do God’s will, not just a select priestly caste
  • True understanding comes through committed action, not merely intellectual knowledge
  • Five elements for spiritual growth: Anyone, Willing to do, Action, Knowledge, Edification (AWAKE)
  • Speaking for one’s own glory versus seeking God’s glory distinguishes true and false teachers
  • Jesus challenged the religious leaders on their inconsistent application of the Law
  • Many people followed religious practices without having a personal relationship with Christ
  • The invitation to “come” to Jesus remains open to all who are thirsty
  • Even temple guards recognized that “never has a man spoken the way this man speaks”
  • Nicodemus showed courage by defending Jesus among hostile religious leaders

Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was? John 7:42

Only the man who does God's will can truly understand his teaching. That is not a theological but a universal truth. We learn by doing and that is essential.

Throughout this Bible study, we’re reminded that Jesus offers a personal invitation to all who are spiritually thirsty. His words continue to speak with unique authority across the centuries because He is the embodiment of truth. Like Nicodemus, we’re called to move beyond religious knowledge toward genuine relationship. Jesus doesn’t just want followers who know about Him—He desires disciples who actively do His will and experience the transforming power of His presence. The good news is that this invitation remains open to everyone, regardless of background, as we commit ourselves fully to Him.
