Psalm 82

Psalm 82

(Read Psalm 82)

The psalm begins with a very disturbing statement for those who are his. “God takes his stand in his own congregation; he judges in the midst of the rulers.” God is a God of love, he loves us with an immeasurable love, but that does not mean he is blind to all that takes place in the church. He state that he will stretch a plumb line over Jerusalem, the line of Samaria and the plummet over the House of Ahab. 2 Kings 21:13, Amos 7:7-8

The plum line is an instrument needed in the building trade to measure whether or not a wall is straight. it is used in a picturesque way to tell us that God tests us to see if we come up to the standard that he expects. This is not only for the Jew of the Old Testament.

Peter reminds us that judgement begins first in the household of faith 1 Peter 4:17. God looks for his children to be living Christlike lives. The standard he looks for is that which makes us distinctly different to the world. How do we measure up to these expectations?
