Psalm 72

Psalm 72

(Read Psalm 72)

The New Testament bears witness to the fact that the writers of the Old Testament did not quite grasp that the Holy Spirit was inspiring their writings, and that these writings contain prophetic insight. They did not comprehend at the time, but were intrigued by what they had written. 1 Peter 1:11-13

Here the Psalmist talks about a king, but which king ? Revelation 19:16 reminds us that Jesus is King of Kings and the writer also in that chapter points out that another name for this King is The Word of God, linking with John 1:1 where we can see that the Lord Jesus is this king.

There are many marks of Christ in this psalm. He will have compassion. He will rescue His people from oppression and violence. He will deliver the needy. His rule will stretch from sea to sea, a quaint way of expressing the truth that one day He will rule over all the earch. Also His name will be glorious forever, for when there is a new heaven and a new earth He will still reign.

The Eternal King.
