Psalm 141

Psalm 141

(Read Psalm 141)

The Psalmist expresses his need for help in his spiritual conflict. It is sometimes forgotten by modern Christians that we are involved in the same battle. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:11-18 that we need real armour to protect us and the weapons of the Bible one of which is described as the sword of the spirit. But we all have a weakness as expressed here in Psalm 141:3.

The weakness of the tongue, James tells us (James 3:1-12), is that it is only a small member but it ctreates great problems. He describes it as a fire, a world of iniquity and its ability to cause serious problems is beyond our understanding. As children we had a saying ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but calling does not hurt me’, but the evidence of life demonstrates how wrong we were. The tongue badly used has caused many believers to loose their faith and many churches to empty. That is why Jesus states that what comes ‘out of a man defiles a man’, Mark 7:20. The tongue expresses the thoughts and ideas of the mind and when used badly it both injures others and damages our own spiritual life.
