Psalm 110

Psalm 110

(Read Psalm 110)

The Psalms are the song book of the Bible and this one, Psalm 110, is a song of praise to the Messiah, the anointed one and future leader of all who walk in God’s path. Christ is the Greek word for Messiah. Here he is exalted as a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Who is Melchizedek, what made him such a remarkable character?

We first meet him in Genesis chapter 14 where we learn a number of outstanding features. The first is that his name means king of righteousness, the second that he is king of Salem, later known as Jerusalem, he is therefore the king of peace. The Old Testament clearly teaches that the kings and priests in Israel come from different tribes. But this king is also a priest of the most high God, therefore he is a priest king. Not only that, but Abraham gave a tithe of all he had captured. Lastly, this great person pronounced a blessing on Abraham.

The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews also states that Melchizedek was without beginning and without end, therefore his kingship and priesthood are eternal. His rule is unending and his work as a priest is unending too, Hebrews 7:25. He also lives to make intercession for those who are saved.
